Pro Tips, Products, and Step-by-Step Bath Instructions for New and Expecting Parents

Bathing your newborn baby for the first time is a mix of excitement and concern. For many new and expecting parents, learning how to properly care for their little one—even during bath time—can feel overwhelming. But don't worry! This newborn baby bath guide offers practical tips, recommended products, and clear step-by-step instructions to make bath time safe and enjoyable for both you and your little one.

Whether you are mastering the tiny sponge bath or getting ready to use a baby tub, this post will lead you through the process seamlessly.

Baths are great to add into your baby's bedtime routine.

Understanding the Importance of Bath Time

Bathing your newborn goes beyond hygiene; it promotes bonding and relaxation. A warm bath can soothe a fussy baby and even aid in digestion. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a consistent bedtime routine, which can include bath time, can help babies to sleep better and longer.

Newborns typically do not need daily baths—two to three times a week is often sufficient. This time spent cleaning and comforting can become a cherished moment for both parents and infants.

When to Give Your Newborn Baby a Bath

Newborns should have their first bath once the umbilical cord stump falls off, which usually happens within the first two weeks after birth. If your baby is recovering from a circumcision, the bath should be held off until 2 weeks, even if the umbilical cord stump has fallen off.

Essential Products You’ll Need

Be sure to set up all the items you'll need for your baby's bath.

Before diving in, gather the essential products to keep bath time flowing gently:

  • Baby Bathtub: A soft, foldable tub is ideal for small spaces. Alternatively, a bathtub in the sink can also work well for bathing.

  • Soft Washcloths: Select washcloths that are gentle on your baby’s delicate skin; these are perfect for cleaning small areas.

  • Control the Flow of Water: For a more enjoyable bathing experience, consider using a bath rinse cup (like the one pictured) to easily rinse and keep soap suds away from baby's face.

  • Gentle Baby Soap/Shampoo: Look for hypoallergenic formulas free from harsh chemicals or strong fragrances. Brands like California Baby, Mustela and Tubby Todd offer excellent options.

  • Hooded Towel: A soft, cozy towel keeps your baby warm after the bath. The attached hood helps keep their little head warm, which is important since babies can lose heat quickly.

Set an infant lounger next to your bath setup to easily pick up and lay baby down.

Preparing for Bath Time

Preparation is key for a smooth experience. Here's how to get ready:

  1. Gather Your Supplies: Place all necessary items within arm's reach so you can keep one hand on your baby at all times.

Pro Tip: Lay out all of your baby's after bath time items (diaper, lotion, pj's, etc.) on a changing table or your bed so you can be prepared to get them dressed quickly.

  2. Choose a Comfortable Location: If it's your first time, use a flat surface (like a bathroom counter or kitchen island) to set the baby tub on or placed into a sink, minimizing unnecessary movements.

Pro Tip: Lay out a Dock A Tot or SnuggleMe lounger (see above) on the counter/floor nearby and put your hooded towel on top to place baby on it immediately after removing them from the tub.

  3. Test the Water Temperature: The ideal bath water temperature is between 98 - 100°F. ALWAYS test the water before placing your baby in it. You want to make sure the water feels warm but not hot to your touch.

Pro Tip: A thermometer is ideal, but you can also use the classic method of dipping your wrist or elbow into the water—aiming for a comfortably warm feel.

Step-by-Step Bathing Instructions

Now that you’re set, it's time to bathe your newborn!

Step 1: Undress Your Baby

Gently undress your baby, keeping the diaper on until the very last second to avoid any accidents.

Step 2: Secure Your Baby

If using a bathtub, support your baby's head and neck with one arm while the other hand washes them.

With time, your baby will love bath time!

Step 3: Wet the Washcloth

Wet the soft washcloth in water, wringing out the excess. (Using 2 washcloths can be helpful - 1 draped across their body to keep them warm, and the other for washing.) Begin by cleaning your baby’s face using only water at this stage - no soap yet.

Step 4: Clean the Body

With a bit of soap - if needed, use the washcloth to gently clean one side of the body at a time, starting from the neck and working down. *Think "cleanest to dirtiest" parts. Don’t forget to get into the folds of the arms, legs, neck/under chin, and diaper area. Do a quick wash of their hands and feet too as those can trap fuzz and funk too!

Step 5: Hair Wash (Optional - Do As Needed)

To wash your baby’s hair, use a tiny drop of baby shampoo. Rub it between your hands before gently massaging it into their scalp. You can use a brush like this if they're developing cradle cap. Rinse thoroughly and try to avoid soap in their eyes.

Step 6: Rinse and Dry

Gently lift your baby from the tub or sink, wrapping them in a towel promptly to keep them warm. Pat them dry to avoid irritation.

Step 7: Moisturize

After drying off, consider applying a gentle, baby-safe moisturizer, especially if their skin feels dry. I absolutely love this line!

Step 8: Dress Your Baby

Finally, dress your baby in fresh, comfy clothing. This can be a perfect time for some cuddles!

Tips for a Successful Bath Time

  • Timing Matters: Choose a bath time when your baby is calm, not overly hungry or tired. Many parents find that right after a feeding works well.

  • Make it a Routine: Establishing a consistent bathing schedule helps your baby feel more comfortable with the process.

  • Stay Calm and Positive: Babies might cry or fuss initially, it's totally normal. Your calm demeanor can help soothe them and create a more relaxed atmosphere.

  • Check Water Temperature Throughout: Continuously monitor the water temperature to ensure it remains comfortable for your baby.

Embracing the Bathing Experience

Bathing your newborn may appear daunting, but with the right tips and products, it can become a beloved part of your baby care routine. Remember that practice makes perfect, and each bath will feel easier with time. Most importantly, enjoy these fleeting moments—they grow up so quickly!

As you navigate this new chapter of parenting, take your time and trust your instincts. Before you know it, you will feel confident at baby bath time!

Happy bathing!
