Hi, I'm Cassie Williams of Top Notch Newborn Care! I have been caring for newborns professionally since 2014. I am a Postpartum Doula, Certified Newborn Care Specialist (NCS), New Parent Educator and American Red Cross CPR Instructor based in Orange County, California.

If you have a choking relief device, like the @life_vac or Dechoker, don’t just open the box and put it up in a cabinet. 🙈

Be prepared for choking emergencies by doing these 3 things TODAY:

1️⃣Know how to use it AND understand its limitations.

- Get familiarized with it!
- Watch training videos from the company.
- Identify the mask sizes, how to use it correctly, etc.
- You might be surprised to find that these are NOT approved for use on a newborn/infant.

2️⃣Make sure everyone in the home knows where it’s stored!

- It will not help to have this stored in a place where you or a loved one can’t find or access it.

3️⃣ Most importantly: Find a class to learn and practice hands-on skills for choking relief and other emergencies for infants, children and adults.

- Don’t waste precious minutes relying on finding, assembling and using a device when you will always have your hands available to jump into action in seconds!
- Find a local class to learn and practice these life-saving hands-on skills.

While we’re on then topic, here’s a few more tips for your freezer stash:

🍼 Breastmilk can only be used within 24 hours of being defrosted - so only pull out what you need.

❄️ Frozen breastmilk can stay in the refrigerator freezer for up 6 months.

🧊 A deep freezer can hold breastmilk for up to 12 months.

🥶 If you don’t have a deep freezer, don’t have the space or budget for one, consider asking a local family member to store it in theirs.

Time. Is. A. Thief.

Cue the waterworks! 😭

Did you know that high lipase enzymes in breastmilk can develop a soapy, metallic or fishy taste when cooled or frozen? But don’t worry, it’s still safe for baby to drink! 😉

However, if the milk is rejected by your baby, remember it’s still packed with nutrients and can be used creatively to avoid waste. 🤔

Here are 3 things to do with it:

🔥 1. Scalding Before Storage: To prevent the change of taste and smell occurring by the presence of high lipase, you can scald the milk before freezing. Heat the milk to about 180°F until you see tiny bubbles around the edges but not boiling. Quickly cool and then freeze the milk.

🍼 2. Try Mixing It with Fresh Milk: Some babies may not mind the taste of high lipase milk, but if yours does, you can try mixing it with freshly expressed milk to dilute the flavor. A 50:50 ratio should do the trick.

🛁 3. Using in Other Ways: If your baby refuses the milk due to the taste, you can use it in homemade baby food recipes, in smoothies for older children, or even as a soothing breastmilk bath for your baby’s skin.

These methods can help you make the most of your expressed breastmilk, even if it has a high lipase content. 🤍

Work hard, play hard, right? 😜

I had to jump on board with this trend and do my own! 😆

And in true mom/business-owner fashion, at one point during spring break, I was truly answering emails while holding a 50lb 4.5 year old on my shoulders 🥵

Don’t fall for the notion that babies should smell like the artificial fragrances in laundry detergent. ✋🏻

After all, they smell amazing au natural, amirite? 😍

Here are 4 ways to help keep artificial fragrances and chemicals to a minimum:

🤍 Free and Clear Detergents: Look for detergents that are free of dyes, perfumes, and harsh chemicals. Brands like @puracy, @mollys_suds, @ecoscleans and @seventhgeneration offer these options.

🩵 Run a second rinse cycle to ensure the clothing is washed thoroughly and that no residue is left that could irritate baby’s skin.

🩷 Use vinegar! Vinegar works as a natural fabric softener and odor eliminator. I like to add 1/2 cup to the “fabric softener” section of the washing machine and let the vinegar work its magic!

💛 Skip the stain treatments! Instead, use a small bit of your laundry detergent and an old toothbrush to scrub the stain. Wash as usual, and if the stain remains, lay it outside in the sunshine for a few hours. Sun bleaching is an amazing natural way to treat stains, especially baby poop!

We can only control so much in our baby’s environment, so don’t stress and do your best! 😉

Try to use some of these alternatives to traditional baby laundry detergent that are gentle and safe for baby’s sensitive skin. ☁️

You’ll find that some of these are comparable or even cheaper than conventional baby laundry detergent.🙌🏻

🌙 Let’s talk night feeds! 🌙

The goal is to feed your baby and get back to sleep, right? 😴

So the less we stimulate them, the better chances we have for everyone to get back to sleep. 😉

Feeds at night should be as boring and low stimulation as possible. 🥱

This isn’t an ideal opportunity for playing, keep that for the daytime. Try to keep talking to a minimum, if possible. 🤫

Keep the lights low or off and opt for a RED/amber toned light to help with the release of melatonin. That way you can see what you’re doing but you won’t be disturbing you or your baby’s sleep.🏮

Hopefully these tips help you and your little one breeze through middle of the night feeds and drift back to dreamland, like my newest sweet babe, Sadie! 😍

Adding a Pediatric OT to a postpartum team offers numerous benefits for both parents and newborns. Here’s what Yvonne with @babyandbeyondtherapy has to say about working with a pediatric OT:

Collaboration with a multidisciplinary team provides comprehensive care for families and the newborn, as well as addressing development and psychosocial holistic needs.

Top 3 reasons how OT can be beneficial during the newborn period:

1. Early Detection and Intervention: Pediatric OT’s are trained to recognize developmental delays and sensory processing issues early on. By assessing the newborn’s motor skills, sensory processing abilities, and overall development, they can identify any potential concerns and provide timely interventions to address them effectively.

This includes: assessing oral motor skills, breast and bottle feeding and positioning. Sensory processing difficulties can affect a baby’s ability to regulate and impact development.

Pediatric OTs have specialized training regarding the nervous system and know techniques to help a baby regulate, respond to stimulie, and engage in age appropriate activities to enhance their well being.

2. Support for Parental Education: New parents often have questions and concerns about their newborn’s development and well-being. A pediatric OT can offer valuable education and guidance on topics such as infant feeding, positioning, and promoting optimal developmental milestones. This support empowers parents to play an active role in their child’s growth and development.

3. Addressing Feeding Challenges: Many newborns experience feeding difficulties, such as problems with latching, sucking, or swallowing. A pediatric OT trained in feeding can assess the underlying causes of these challenges and provide strategies to improve feeding success.

By addressing feeding issues early on, they can ensure that newborns receive the nutrition they need for healthy growth and development.
